Inquiry based scientific learning
Year 7 pupils will benefit enormously from a visit to DIG. They can compare archaeological evidence with other sources - e.g. illustrations and buildings - as they study medieval Britain using York as a case study.
Key Stage 3 QCA Schemes of work
History
Unit 4 - How did the medieval church affect people's lives?
(Section 2) What impact did parish churches have on people's lives?
Science
Unit 9M - Investigating scientific questions.
Key Stage 3 workshop on the archaeological identification and investigation of artefacts.
The aim of this workshop is to help the children draw upon their experiences during the standard DIG visit to gain a greater understanding of the investigative aspects of archaeology and how these enable a greater understanding of an archaeological site and its wider context within the historical period.
The children will use replica artefacts (or possibly some of the sturdier and more plentiful genuine objects i.e. pottery sherds and glass) covering the four main periods at DIG including the medieval period. The sessions will be led by an experienced member of staff with a background knowledge of archaeology and the historical period being covered.
Sessions can focus on one historical period or the children can split into groups to cover all periods within a session
