Key Stage 2

Burials & Beliefs
Time: Approximately 1 hour
Location: DIG Education Room

During this workshop children will work in teams and learn about different burial rites and practices, including what different grave goods were associated with different archaeological periods. A big emphasis will be placed on teamwork as the children will be split into groups to create a burial themselves.

Beneath the Floorboards
Time: Approximately 1 hour
Location: DIG Education Room

Find out what was hidden beneath floorboards of two Victorian houses in York and uncover the identities of the families who lived there. A real insight into Victorian life in York using innovative techniques to introduce children to chronology. Sessions are led by one of our Victorian interactives and include object handling including real and replica Victorian objects.

Secrets in the soil
Time: Approximately 1 hour
Location: DIG Education Room

Students get hands-on with life in Viking times as they use scientific and archaeological investigation techniques to study and interpret the environmental remains of Viking Age York:

  • Teeth and eating
  • Rocks and soil
  • Enquiry into environmental and technological contexts
  • Micro-organisms (observations, collecting and recording data, interpreting evidence, using appropriate scientific tools/apparatus)

DIG Live (Applicable to all ages)

This 2.5 hour session is affiliated to our latest excavation at Hungate in the centre of York.

Activities include:

  • A visit to DIG 
  • A guided tour of the Hungate excavation site 
  • An interactive workshop where children get the chance to sort and label finds from the Hungate dig, and experience a range of other archaeological techniques


All of the above workshops are charged at £1 per person
