A new initiative that uses online conferencing technology to meet ICT and history requirements, promote questioning and increase confidence amongst children has been launched following a successful trial period.
The Skype Experience uses the latest Skype video conferencing capabilities to give teachers access to online learning resources and bring classrooms to life. It also enables schools that can't visit JORVIK Viking Centre, DIG or Barley Hall to hear from - and talk to - a Viking Tudor, or Roman from their classroom.
Skype Experiences are 45 minutes sessions in which costumed characters engage with pupils and teachers via a live web link against a period backdrop, talking about their lives and showing relevant artefacts. As well as engaging pupils in a fun and interactive way, the session is recorded, so teachers can play it back and revisit the content in future lessons. The video conference ends with a 10 - 15 minute opportunity for the class to ask questions that they have prepared beforehand or during the session.
The beauty of video conferencing is that it removes the boundaries of geography and enables any school with a broadband connection and interactive whiteboard to take part. The costumed characters can also show and talk about precious objects that are not generally available for public viewing; and children can interact with the characters - in real time - either by speaking with them on screen or via a chat room facility".
