The Dig Area

Grab a trowel and join our archaeologist in unearthing amazing artefacts from the four excavation pits. Will you find the skeletal remains of a monk in the medieval trench, the chamber pot in the Victorian area or something else? Don't worry, the soil is not real so you do not need to bring a change of clothes.

Ask the Archaeologist

This is your chance to ask your archaeologist all about their work and what they do when on a real live excavation. You will also find a tray full of real excavated objects that have been dug out of the ground here in York! When you know what each object is, you can even have a go at sorting each one into your finds tray.

In the Field

Archaeologists don't just dig! Now is your chance to find out more about the things we have dug up and what these items can tell us about the people who used to live in York. Use your new archaeological knowledge to map out the finds from the famous Coppergate excavation to reveal who lived and worked there a thousand years ago! You can also reconstruct a Roman wall decoration, and record evidence of a medieval burial

Labworks

Now it is time to take a closer look at what we do with the things archaeologists excavate. You will see what we do to preserve a Roman soldiers' helmet, examine a giant core of soil, reveal all the bugs and beetles from a Victorian house, and even analyse human remains!

Study zone

The meanings behind Roman symbolism
